Benson Schools # 1
Benson Public Schools were voted the best schools in Arizona. Benson edged out Vail School district who was #1 last year.
We would like to thank Dr. Woodall and his team for their hard work and dedication to the education of Benson's children. You can read more about this story on the San Pedro Valley News/Sun website.
Summer is coming to an end here in Benson. Labor Day is next weekend and then it is back to work and school for most folks. The summer rains have brought us much needed moisture. The San Pedro Valley is as green as I have ever seen it. Beautiful.
So what is going on around here? I have included a few short paragraphs on what has happened the last couple of months.
Mural Project in Benson:
Doug Quarles has started the Mural project on the walls at the Benson Visitor Center on the 19th of August. This is one of the first. The mural project is sponsored by the Benson Clean & Beautiful Committee. They will depict the Railroad history of Benson. Stop by the next time you are in town and take a look. The Committee hopes to continue the mural project throughout the town. If you have an interest in a mural for your building, you can contact us here at SAEDG and I will put you in touch with Lisa Hill/Chairperson of the committee.
The City of Benson has been in the process of selecting a new City Manager since April when Glenn Nichols retired. On Monday night the 26th the City Council authorized negotiations to begin with Candidate Steve Pauken. Interim City Manager Jim Cox along with the Council hope to be able to vote on a contract by next Council meeting. Steve has been the City Manager of Bisbee for number of years.
We continue to work with the Rosemont Copper Company to give them local support for the new Copper mine. The last week of July we got an update from Rod Pace (CEO) of Rosemont. They are still hoping for a decision from the Forest Service sometime in September.
We would like to ask everyone to write a letter to the Army Corp of Engineers and Forest Service to encourage a favorable decision soon. SE Arizona needs the jobs and business that this project will bring. Please go to the Rosemont Copper website for additional information.
